The Breakroom: Greek Life, Word Of The Year, Cell Phone Ban
The Breakroom gang joined host Celeste Headlee to weigh in on the week’s news. The panel included comedian Roy Wood, Jr. of “The Daily Show,” former NPR correspondent Kathy Lohr, Georgia State University professor Hector Fernandez, and Republican strategist Julianne Thompson.
As a conservative, I support free-market energy solutions. A diversified energy portfolio of nuclear, fossil fuels, natural gas, wind and solar all work together to ensure the United States is not only energy independent, but also keeps cost more affordable. At the forefront of the most practical and cost-effective forms of energy today is nuclear power.
Through nuclear we have the opportunity to have a reliable energy source of carbon-free power for decades to come. As a consumer and a ratepayer, I want to make sure we take advantage of that energy source, and for that reason I support the completion of Plant Vogtle.
As Georgians we find ourselves in a dilemma without an easy answer. Units 3 and 4 are nearly 50 percent complete. While initially ratepayers were protected with a fixed-price contract, in the end the contractor could not perform. Fortunately that same contract required a guarantee by the parent company, which has made good on that guarantee and is now benefiting ratepayers.
As fiscal conservatives, it would not be the ideal situation to leave several billion dollars in ratepayers’ stranded assets and also lose thousands of jobs. We need to be able to harness that energy source for generations of Georgians to come while at the same time protecting Georgia ratepayers.
This is not a blanket statement. I strongly urge the Public Service Commission, who represents us; to work together to make sure we consumers are protected in this process. The PSC has already enacted mechanisms that cut shareholder profits by hundreds of millions of dollars as construction drifts off schedule. Even more protections are being considered.
We can protect Georgia ratepayers and make sure we have a clean, reliable energy source. Let’s not give up. Let’s keep Georgia moving forward

An Open Letter to Republican Senators and Members of Congress – This is Your Hail Mary Moment
Throughout my lifetime I have given much time, energy, and dedication to electing Republicans. Republicans who campaign on the platform of our great Party…the Party that has always stood for freedom, prosperity, personal responsibility, national security, and the sanctity of human life. Those are all mantras of the GOP. They are the essence of the belief system of not only our base, but of the majority of Americans.
I am writing this open letter to implore you to act, because right now America does not believe you will. They are looking at the record. The promises made during past campaigns that have not been delivered upon. Have you seen America’s reaction to the lack of follow-through? Have you heard people say they have no desire to elect many of our good candidates no matter how substantive they may be or how good their record may be? That is because of many that hold office in your respective Chambers.
Please understand I am not an all or nothing activist. I am a fairly pragmatic person. I believe in incrementalism and understand you cannot repair all the damage that has been done to our country in one or two sessions. The American people have no desire to micromanage you. We want to have faith in your promises and go on about our daily lives, but we are tired of people that campaign one way and govern another. And right now there are two issues that hang in the balance that are of critical importance to the American people. Two issues that cannot wait. Two issues that are at the core of our belief system as Americans and as decent human beings. These two issues will make or break the Republican majority.
It is expected on Friday the House of Representatives will take up a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, an organization that makes it’s living (despite it’s false excuses and claims) off the pre-born murders of the next generation. An organization that by it’s own admission in videos carefully and meticulously crushes only certain body parts in-utero and sometimes delivers complete, in tact cadavers of destroyed babies in order to salvage their organs, their neural tissue, their eyes… for harvesting and sale to the highest bidder.
We have all heard the claims by the abortion industry and it’s mouthpieces in the media that the videos were taken “out of context”. But, there does not exist a context in which these abhorent statements could be taken any other way but in total horror, repulsion, shock, and disgust. No decent human being could support federal funding…that means our tax dollars…our money going to fund the extinction of our next generation.
There is every reason to believe the House will pass the bill. The issue will then fall upon the Senate. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said we will have to wait, because the President doesn’t support defunding Planned Parenthood. That makes one wonder if Senator McConnell desires to represent the people that elected him and the Senate Republican majority, or does he believe he was elected to do the bidding of the left? We expect those who assume the title of leader to act as one.
Finally there is the Iran Nuclear Deal, the worst foreign policy decision in the history of the United States. A deal with a totalitarian government that supports terrorism and puts our greatest ally in the Middle East, Israel, in mortal danger. Indeed the supreme leader of Iran has said Israel will cease to exist within 25 years. This ill-conceived deal trusts a nation that is a major supporter of global terror to monitor itself. This deal will help Iran modernize and protect it’s nuclear capabilities and eventually lead to Iran’s ability to reach the shores of America. Make no mistake…the destruction of Israel and the United States is their goal, and this deal will help put that goal within their reach.
67 years ago, General Omar Bradley made a chilling and applicable statement: “We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount. The world has achieved brilliance without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing than we know about living. If we continue to develop our technology without wisdom or prudence, our servant may prove to be our executioner.”
If Congress fails to act on these two issues ask yourselves this question – Will the next generation die at the hands of an organization that murders them and sells off their body parts for profit, or will they die by the explosion of a nuclear bomb that reached our shores because of a lack of resolve among our national leaders to stop the Iran Nuclear Deal?
You are the people we believed in, trusted, and elected to office. That means we trusted you with our lives and the lives of our children and it is time many of you understand your job is not about self glorification or bait and switch at the Capitol. Decisions of life and death are made under that Dome. This is not about partisanship, it is about the very survival of our nation and it is in your hands.
Republican leaders have lost the faith of not only our base, but of the American people. You have an opportunity to rebuild it and restore it. This is your Hail Mary moment. Don’t drop the ball or it will not be passed to you again.

Note to activists – We have two options at this point – Pressure McConnell and Senators who are up for reelection in 2016 into allowing a floor vote by voting for cloture (to end debate). Democrats are blocking cloture.
The other option takes strong leadership, but it is the way this should be handled in my opinion, and that is to use the parliamentary procedure tool known as a nuclear option. In other words the Senate overrides a rule or precedent by a majority vote.
These are the names of the Senators up for reelection that need to be pressured by citizens and by leadership. Please call these Democrats Senators, call your own Senators, and call Senate Majority Leader Mitch McMconnell.
